Day 4: The Eucharist Lived

I place myself in the Presence of God.

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
God, You are here, in my thoughts and in my heart; You envelop me with Your Presence.

Louis Brisson

Just as the all the planets gravitate around the sun and draw their light and life from it; in tha same way, Our Lord in the Most Blessed Sacrament must animate all our actions. (Louis Brisson, Retreat of 1882, 6th Instruction)

Scripture Text

After He had supped with them, He took the bread, blessed it, and breaking it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him; but He vanished from their sight. They said to one another, “Were not our hearts burning within us, as He spoke to us along the way, while He explained the Scriptures to us?” And they got up immediately and returned to Jerusalem, where they found the Eleven and those who were with them, gathered together, saying, “The Lord has truly risen and has appeared to Simon.” Then they began to relate their experience on the way and how they had recognized Him in the breaking of the bread. (Luke 24: 30-35)

Reflection

Louis Brisson drew his life and strength from the source of the Eucharist. He once said in an Instruction to the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales that: “The Holy Mass has to be the starting point for your day’s work, the moment when you take refuge in God.” He knew that the Most Blessed Sacrament of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ is spiritual nourishment and the force that gives life. There, in the Eucharist, our whole life is placed before God, in such a way that it becomes transformed through His Will.

Questions for reflection

  • Do I see the Mass as my source of life?
  • How will I celebrate Holy Mass knowing that the source of Life lies hidden therein?
  • Do I let the Bread of Life touch me and open my eyes?

Prayer

God of Love, before His death, Your Son, Jesus Christ gave us His Body and His Blood to be our food and the source for our Life. He sustained us again and again by means of this broken Bread shared together and this source offered to quench our thirst. Open my eyes anew to see that most wonderful Gift, which surpasses all others, when I lose sight of that source. Amen.

Our Father, Who art in heaven…     Glory be to the Father….
